Adam: "My friends and I were obsessed with wrestling when we were kids. Every week we'd go to the video store and rent wrestling movies. In the summer of 1994, we went in and they had a copy of the original UFC. Our parents had no idea what it was, so they let a couple of 9-year-olds rent it. At this point in my life I was still fairly sure that wrestling was real, so watching MMA for the first time was a bit confusing but really exciting. After watching that VHS a couple of times, we stopped playing pretend wrestling in the back yard and started trying to do what Royce Gracie was doing. We had no skills, but my friend's drunk dad and his friends would sit and watch us try to tear each other apart every weekend. We rented a few more as they came out, but we started to lose interest and reverted back to the WWF.
When I got into the eighth grade we had a wrestling team at our school. I joined the team and loved the sport. We competed at several tournaments and I did pretty good for my age. Unfortunately, when I went to try out for the wrestling team in grade 9, only two of us showed up and they cancelled the program. Again I lost interest in the sport.
In 2005 my brother convinced me to go to a bar to watch the most anticipated fight to date. I had no idea who either guy was, but I thought I'd tag along. After Chuck knocked Randy out I was completely hooked on the UFC again and have been ever since.
In 2007 I finally looked into training and started going to the first MMA gym that I found. I trained for the better part of a year but life and excuses got in the way and I dropped out.
I stayed in good shape for several years after I stopped training, but eventually I bought a house, started my business, and had 2 beautiful children. Over the last 7 years I stopped doing the activities that kept me in shape, and I worked non stop. When I wasn't working I was hanging out with my family, and I never took the time to look after myself. I stopped "getting after it" and I basically gave up. This new lifestyle added 40 lbs to my frame and that gap was growing every year.
The men on my dad's side of the family have all given up on their health. My dad and my uncle both died at 55 from heart attacks brought on by poor lifestyle choices. After I'd gained the 40 lbs, that future was starting to look pretty realistic for me and it was pissing me off. What's the point of working yourself to death if you're going to die before you get to enjoy it? I figured that if I could turn it around now, I would increase the chances of seeing my kids graduate, grow older and I could even meet my grandkids one day. The desire to be around for my kids for as long as possible lit a fire under my ass and I started trying to find a solution to my self-inflicted problem.
When I found the W2W program it seemed like the perfect solution. I could train early in the morning which wouldn't affect my company or my family time. It would also give me major motivation. If knowing that you have to fight someone in 22 weeks doesn't get you motivated to train hard and clean up your eating, then nothing will. It would also re-connect me with the sport that has been interwoven into my life since I was 9 years old.
This program is one of the best things that I've done for myself in a long time. I've met many great people that I now consider friends. I've learned a ton of new skills from some amazing coaches, and I've pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible. I've also lost 25 lbs and more importantly, gotten into amazing shape. I still have a ways to go, and I plan on continuing with my training once this is over, but I can't imagine how I would feel today without this program."
